4/23/09 - 5th Day - After Dinner. This young thing scratching her head on a mesquite tree is Petra (so long as she remains a female, which is what we think she is). She was born this morning to Pita, who was one of our first calves born here on our land. This makes Petra our first grand-calf. Here's momma...

Pita's momma was Maria, the 1/2 Watusi - 1/2 Longhorn. Maria was our first cattle here on the ranch. Pita is going on three years old this summer, and she is 1/4 Watusi and 3/4 Longhorn. Young Petra, then, is 1/8 Watusi, and as cute as a button. Lord willing, Danielle and the children will begin milking Pita in a week or so because Danielle wants to make and sell Longhorn milk soap. We'll have to do some work with Pita calming her down a bit, but she has been heavily trained in the past, and should do alright. Don't know exactly what we'll do with Petra, but she is a beautiful calf and I'm sure she'll fit right in for awhile. The sire of Petra was Pedro, who we butchered this past fall. Pedro's horns will be going to my Aunt up in New York pretty soon. So here is another peek at Petra...

We had 100 degree heat yesterday. Not so bad today, but 100 is brutal and not good for April. The prognosticators are calling for things to get back to normal over the next week or so, and that we might have some rain in the forecast for Sunday through Wednesday of next week. The last two days got so hot, that we jumped into the back tank (pond). Here is a picture of Kelly and I after we jumped in. Don't worry, we are clothed under there. I know my enemies will copy this pic to add to their book... "Look at Bunker's Greek bath!". This also disproves their theory that I don't have a reflection or shadow... anyway, the water was plenty cold, and it felt good.

I have to give Tracy credit for the photo... good job girl. How much are they paying you?
Ok, back to work. Hope y'all enjoyed the pics.

VERY beautiful calf, nice job Pita....give her a few extra cubes Michael, she deserves it. :-)
Praise the Lord for his provisions and goodness!

BillyBob,
Pita did good. Now we have to decide what to do with the calf. Sell? or Steak?
Michael
I say sell, probably get a good price for her.
BTW, the Texas themed Greek bath has ta go, you're not allowed such a luxury.
BillyBob
That is true. I mean, I should be careful since, according to the Marcic's this is the water I force my children to haul and drink while I sip "case after case" of expensive beer!
Michael
Nice pics. Glad to see you could pull yourself away from your drinking and online poker long enough to bathe. Oh yes, and womanizing... (tongue firmly planted in cheek)
Hey, you know, most women like their men fresh out of the silty cattle tank. And, did I say it was cold?

The calf is beautiful. Sell or steak???? hmmmm Well maybe she would like to come on over to the Peck ranch. As Bill said," the Lord is good".
